1. Can you think of a piece of wisdom that has served you well in life? What is it? Where or from whom did you learn it?
2. Read James 3:13-18. What elements does James say describe godly wisdom? Which of those stands out to you and why?
3. Read Proverbs 9:10. Why do you think Solomon said fearing God is the necessary starting point for being wise?
4. When people talk about finding and following God’s will, they are often looking for God to give direction in very specific life decisions. What role does general godly wisdom, like we find the book of Proverbs, play in discerning God’s leading in such life decisions? What should a person do if their sense of God’s leading seems to be in conflict with the general wisdom given in Scripture?

SERMON QUESTIONS:
1. Have you ever encountered an issue where you really wanted to know if God had a specific plan for your life? If so, what was it?
2. When it comes to finding God’s will, what are some ways you or people you know have tried to determine it? Which of those methods have you found helpful? Have you seen any that seem risky or unreliable?
3. Marriage is certainly one area where people often want to be sure they know God’s will. Read 1 Corinthians 7:39-40. How does Paul handle this very important topic? Is that at all surprising? Why or why not.
4. Read Matthew 6:9-10. This is the opening of Jesus’ model prayer for his disciples. When Jesus instructed us to pray for God’s will to be done, what was he was asking for?

1. Read Ephesians 5:21-6:9. The idea of submitting & obeying come up several times. In your own life have these terms been positive or negative concepts? Why or why not?
2. Paul’s emphasis up to this point has been the unity of the church – all whom Paul describes as being “in Christ”. Why do you think he suddenly pivots from that big group concept to talking about private household relationships?
3. Looking at the counsel Paul gives to women, men, children, masters and servants, does it appear the ask he makes of each is fair? Is Paul asking more of any one role than another?
4. Thinking about where you personally fit into interpersonal relationships Paul describes, how do you personally find this challenging?

3. Paul talks about living wisely vs foolishly. According to Psalm 14:1, what is the defining mark of a fool? As a well-trained Jewish rabbi, a major source of wisdom for Paul would have been the book of Proverbs. Are there any particular Proverbs that have been especially helpful to you?
4. Why do you think Paul puts so much emphasis on singing together?

SERMON QUESTIONS :
1. Ephesians 5:1 begins with the word “Therefore”, which ties what comes next to what has been said previously. Read Ephesians 4:32. How does Paul’s statement after “Therefore” relate to the statement before it?
2. Considering Paul’s emphasis on unity in this letter, why do you think he picks the particular things listed in Ephesians 5:3-4 as not appropriate among God’s people?
3. Is it significant that Paul says they “were darkness” but now “are light” as opposed to saying they “were in darkness” but now are “in light”? What difference does it make?
4. Someone has said that light is a great disinfectant. When Paul says we should expose darkness (Ephesians 5:11-13), is his focus on exposing darkness outside or inside the church? What kind of exposure do you think is healthy vs unhealthy?

1. Have you ever caught yourself purposefully ignoring something important? If so, what was it? Why did you ignore it? Were there consequences to not paying attention?
2. Read Ephesians 4:17-19. How does Paul describe the condition of people who are alienated from God? Can you think of examples from your own observations of the kinds of things Paul describes?
3. Read Romans 1:18-23 and compare to Ephesians 4:17-19. What common themes are there? Do Paul’s comments in Romans add any deeper understanding to his words in Ephesians?
4. Read Ephesians 4:20-24. What does it look like in your own life to put off the old self and put on the new? What do you find helpful in doing that?
