2. John the Baptist reminded the Jews he was preaching that being right with God was a matter of the heart, not their heritage as children of Abraham. What are some things you think people today can put confidence in spiritually that can’t guarantee God’s favor?

3. When people asked John what they should do to repent, he gave very practical and personal instructions. Thinking about your own life, where are some places God has asked you to repent? What action did that require?

4. What do you think about Pastor Tim’s theory about the dove? How does the imagery of Jesus’ baptism speak to your heart?

1. What difference does it make in your reading of Luke's gospel knowing he interviewed eyewitnesses?

2. Do you think your response to an angel with an unbelievable message would be more like Zechariah or Mary? How does your past experience and personality play into that answer?

3. Have you ever seen God bring abundance out of a situation you considered hopeless? What happened?

4. Are there any blessings God has given that you are tempted to hold onto too tightly? What would it mean for you to open your hand with that blessing?

1.  Jesus described Himself as the true vine.  That implies that there are false vines--things that give the appearance of being a source of life but aren't.  What are some false vines you can identify that people sometimes "abide" in hoping to enrich their lives but finding disappointment?

 

2.  In John 15:9, Jesus compares His love for us as being similar to His Father's love for Him.  What does that tell you about Jesus' love for you?

 

3.  Jesus' advice to His disciples was that they should "abide" in His love.  What does that mean?  How do you do that?

 

4.  Based on Jesus' teaching in this passage, which of these two statements is correct and what difference does it make?

A.  God loves me because I will bear fruit.

B.  I will bear fruit because God loves me.

1. Jesus says He is the owner of the flock, not just a hired hand. Have you ever observed the difference between an owner vs an employee in a time of crisis? What does that picture tell you about Jesus?

2. In John 10:14-15, Jesus compares the shared knowledge between Himself and His flock to the shared knowledge between Himself and His Father. What does that mean?

3. Jesus talks about calling other sheep out of other sheep pens to join His flock. What sheep pens has the Good Shepherd called you out of?

4. Spend some time meditating on Psalm 23 and the Shepherd's great love for you.
