Study & Discussion Questions:

2. What sorts of things cause you to drift? Suffering? Distractions? Doubts? Other?

4. What encouragement is there in knowing that God, in the person of Jesus, has experienced the kinds of struggles you experience – both in suffering and temptation?

Jesus is Better - week 1
Sunday Sep 12, 2021
Sunday Sep 12, 2021
Join us Live as Pastor Tim begins his brand new series on the Book of Hebrews, entitled "Jesus is Better."
Study & Discussion Questions:
-----------------------------------------------------
1. I mentioned that these opening verses are like a hymn of superlatives. Which one speaks the most to you and why?
2. One of the descriptors used of Jesus is that he is the “exact imprint of God’s nature”. Think a bit about what you know of Jesus. What insights does it give you into the nature of God?
3. In their conversation about how the universe began, Physical Chemist & Atheist told Christian Mathematician that it was his conviction that mathematics explained it al. Dr. Lennox’s answer was, “2+2=4 but that has never put $4 in your pocket. Mathematics doesn’t create anything.” What did he mean by that?
4. Chapter 1 concludes with a lengthy discussion of how Jesus is superior to angels. Thinking of how the Bible describes angels, try making a list of their characteristics. Since Jesus is far superior, what insight does that comparison give you into the power and majesty of Christ? Find Dungeness Community Church on the web:

Live Like Mountain Folk - 8/22/21 - The Wide & Narrow Gates
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he examines the difference between the wide & narrow gates as described in Matthew 7:13-14.
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------
1. If you are a follower of Jesus, what about making that choice felt like going through a narrow gate for you? Why did you do it? If you are not a follower of Jesus, what keeps you from choosing His path? Have you thought seriously about where the path you are on is leading?
2. How could a very religious person still end up missing the path?
3. What baggage are you tempted to try and drag along on the trail that you know Jesus keeps calling you to leave behind?
4. Are there any specific areas where you could really use some encouragement right now to keep on walking the path? Who do you know that gives you that encouragement and prays with you? Find Dungeness Community Church on the web:

Live Like Mountain Folk - 8/15/21 -The Golden Rule
Sunday Aug 15, 2021
Sunday Aug 15, 2021
Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explores the meaning of "The Golden Rule" by looking at Matthew 7:12.
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------
1. How do you think this command to do to others as we would want others to do to us ties into the rest of Jesus’ sermon? What are the connections?
2. Do you own comparison and contrast between the statement of Rabbi Shammai (“What is hateful to you, do not do to anyone else.”) and Jesus (“Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”).
3. Pick one particular relationship where you find it challenging to know how – or even to want to – show love to other person. Try to think specifically how you would want to be shown love if you were in their position. How could you show some of that love this week?
4. Reflect a bit on Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane (““My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”). What are the implications of the Golden Rule when it comes to Jesus’ love for you?

Live Like Mountain Folk - 8/8/21 - Giving Good Things
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explores what it means to give good things in Matthew 7:7-11.
Discussion and Reflection:
-------------------------------
1. So if a Genie popped out of your coffee pot tomorrow morning, what three things would you wish for?
2. What insights do you gain by seeing this passage within the fuller context of what Jesus has been teaching in the Sermon on the Mount?
3. In Matthew’s account of this sermon, Jesus said our Heavenly Father would give us good things (Matthew 7:11). Luke changed the wording slightly (Luke 11:13) with promise being that our Heavenly Father would give us the Holy Spirit. What good things does the Holy Spirit give us? Are there specific good things that God’s Spirit has done in you since you decided to follow Jesus?
4. Are there any things you think the Holy Spirit may be moving you to pray for in light of Jesus’ sermon?

Live Like Mountain Folk - 8/1/21 - Judgement v Discernment
Sunday Aug 01, 2021
Sunday Aug 01, 2021
Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explores the difference between judgement and discernment, by looking at Matthew 7:1-6.
Discussion and Reflection:
-------------------------------
1. Can you think of a situation where you made a snap judgement about someone and later discovered you were completely wrong?
2. Suppose you have a friend who you discover is cheating on the job. When you try to approach him about his behavior, he responds by saying, “You say you’re a Christian. Why are you judging me?” How would you respond?
3. Jesus warned about people who were good at spotting specks in others’ eyes but remained blind to the planks in their own. Have you ever become aware of a “plank-in-the-eye” type issue in your life? What was it like making that discovery? How did it change you?
4. What do you think of Jesus' advice about not casting pearls before swine? Are there relationships where you have had to ask yourself if you should stop putting the most precious aspects of your faith in front of people?

1. What sorts of things do you tend to become anxious about?
2. How do you know when you are moving from productive planning to unproductive anxiety?

The [other] Great Commission - 7/18/21 - w/ Britt Hemphill
Sunday Jul 18, 2021
Sunday Jul 18, 2021
Children & Family Ministries Pastor, Britt Hemphill, talks about "The [other] Great Commission" by considering who the worlds largest people group is and where they are located now and in the next 30 years.
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Using only one-word adjectives, ask your group to describe what it is about children that makes them uniquely able to understand the life and mission of Jesus.
2. Why is the “4-14 window” so significant in the context of responding to the invitation of the gospel.
3. What surprised you most about the new global realities pastor Britt share about?
4. What role does imagination play in facilitating meaningful interactions with the Word of God? Is there one particular Bible account where imagination has especially added value for you? If so, in what way(s)?
5. Read this quote from The Economist article I’m a bad parent because I’ve forgotten my own childhood: “I am haunted by a sense that my life would be richer, more authentic somehow, if I could more easily access a felt connection to my childhood.” Discuss this quote in the context of our relationship with Christ as adults and keeping in mind how Jesus spoke about children.
6. Discuss thoughts and/or ideas about the idea of intergenerational ministry at DCC. (refresher: intergenerational ministry focuses on connecting multiple generations in faith-forming relationships cultivated through times of corporate worship, intentional discipleship, and ongoing mentoring.)
7. Read Luke 18:16. From a personal standpoint, what are you doing to let children come to Jesus? Discuss some of the ways adults might hinder them from doing so.
