Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explains why we've chosen not to "pass the plate."
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------------------------
1. What might be some examples in our own time of people doing generous things more to be noticed than to be helpful?
2. In discussing what Jesus meant when He said we shouldn’t let our left hand know what our right hand is doing, Pastor Tim talked about “self-hypocrisy”. What did he mean by that?
3. In trying to reconcile what Jesus said in Matthew 5:4 vs 5:16, A.B. Bruce said that Jesus was saying we should “show when tempted to hide” and “hide when tempted to show.” What did he mean by that? Everyone is different – do you find yourself more tempted to hide or show for the wrong reasons?
4. Pastor Tim suggested 4 tests that may be help us determine if our giving is rightly motivated. Which of these is most helpful to you?
• How do you respond when you are generous, and no one notices?
• How do you feel when others are recognized, but you are not?
• When you are asked to give, do you weigh the “impact” it may have on your image?
• What motivates you to give?

Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he examines what it means to Love your enemies.
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Within your birth family are there any strong physical traits or mannerisms that people have noted tend to identify your family as belonging with each other?
2. As a follower of Jesus and a member of God’s family, what family resemblances do you most desire others would see in you?
3. Do you find it easy or hard to let go of wrongs others have done to you?
4. Have you ever had an experience where you made a conscious choice to do good to someone you might have considered an “enemy”? What did you do and what happened?
5. Who today do you think Christians might view in the same categories as the ancient Jews viewed tax collectors and the hated Romans?
6. What would it mean, in our context, to treat those people with the kind of love Jesus describes?
7. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “…the hallmark of the Christian is the ‘extraordinary’ “. What do you think he meant by that?
8. Where do you need to ask God to expand your love?

Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he examines what hermeneutics is in relation to the Bible.
Discussion and Reflection:
------------------------------------------------------------
Here are four guidelines that will generally contribute to a healthy approach to correctly understanding scripture.
• First and foremost, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you the truth of God’s Word.
• The second is to assume that the Bible, in general, says what it means. That is, the Bible is generally to be interpreted literally, taking the plain meaning of the passage over some complicated, allegorical interpretation, (unless it’s obviously meant to be symbolic or a figure of speech.)
• A third tip is to consider the passage in context. What was the historical context? Who wrote it? Who were they writing to, if anyone? Why? What was the cultural context? What was going on at the time, etc?
• Finally, it’s essential to interpret the passage within the context of the Bible itself. How does it support the whole counsel of God as found in scripture? What verses precede and follow the passage? What is the passage as a whole about? What about the book? Is it referencing a different part of Scripture?
